Craighill ad teardown: Pre-order NOW. stock is limited

A hard pre order scarcity ad for one lighter lands on the right page, then a full screen mystery offer quiz covers the price and the button.

Handoff: Partial

The ad is two lines of heavy black type, PRE-ORDER NOW. STOCK IS LIMITED., over an orange SWINGTOP LIGHTER tag and a tight crop of the brushed steel lighter with its arm swung open and the orange bead exposed. The destination is the correct product, and its More info copy walks the same swingarm mechanism and closes with a note that due to unprecedented demand the Swingtop Lighter is currently available for pre order. Between the two sits a full screen YOU'VE GOT A MYSTERY OFFER panel that covers the hero image, the price and the buy button, and asks the visitor to choose Daily Carry, Desk, Bar, Puzzles & Play or Other first. The urgency the ad built pays out into an interest quiz.

The read

A vertical frame on a plain off white ground. Two lines of condensed black caps run across the top, and under them a small orange block holds a serif product name. Below that, cropped by the bottom edge, sits a brushed stainless lighter shot from the side with its hinged arm swung fully open, the striker head raised clear of the body and a single orange bead capping the lever. Nothing else is in the frame: no hand, no flame, no price and no brand lockup.

Why it works

  • Scarcity is stated, not implied. Pre order and limited stock in the first line reframe the click as securing a place rather than buying an object, which is a different and easier decision.
  • The open arm is the product. Shooting the mechanism mid swing shows the one thing that separates this from a disposable, and it does it without a demo video or a caption.
  • One colour does the branding. The orange bead and the orange name block are the only saturated pixels in an otherwise grey frame, so the eye lands on the detail worth remembering.

Objective fit

A pre order unit is still a purchase ask, just with a delivery date attached, so the creative needs the page to confirm both the price and the wait. The urgency has a shelf life, which makes any friction at the fold expensive.

Where it breaks

An interest quiz that covers the buy button undoes the scarcity the ad paid for. Anyone arriving from a creative that names one product has already answered the question the panel is asking, so suppress it for paid traffic on that URL.

Does your own handoff survive the click?
