SharkNinja ad teardown: Creator ip

Slots the product into a joke the audience already follows, instead of asking a creator to perform a brief.

“Buys into a creator's existing comedy format rather than briefing a new one.”

Entry is about Digiday's report that SharkNinja buys into an existing creator comedy format/bit (including the running 'the ick' format) rather than briefing custom branded content. Reviewed all 28 sharkninja.sliced.json creatives and opened the most comedy/UGC-adjacent candidates (backyard-waterslide POV stunt, 'Chef Ruben' demo, '#NinjaPartner' slushi UGC). None reference 'the ick' or any recognizable running comedy bit - the captures are straightforward product demos, influencer testimonials, and catalog-style statics for espresso machines, the Creami XL, HydraSense, and the Crispi microwave. Nothing in the set reads as 'rented' creator IP the way Digiday described.

The read

Digiday reported SharkNinja buying into established creator comedy IP, including the running 'the ick' format, rather than commissioning custom branded content. The bit already has an audience and a rhythm; the brand rents both.

Why it works

  • Established formats carry their own audience. A brief creates something nobody was waiting for. A running bit has people already watching.
  • The creator protects the joke. Because their format is the asset, they resist brand notes that would flatten it, which is exactly the pressure that ruins branded content.
  • Native by construction. It cannot look like an ad interrupting the feed, because it is the thing the viewer follows.

Objective fit

Awareness and consideration. Measurable through branded search and view-through, not last-click.

Where it breaks

You are buying someone else's format, so you do not control it. If the creator has a bad month, the association is not something you can edit.

Does your own handoff survive the click?
