Chubbies ad teardown: Brand budget

Ring-fences a share of budget for work that is not measured on conversion, on purpose.

“Creative with no conversion objective attached to it at all.”

Handoff: Continuous

The ad is a creator video captioned 'POV: Going to the beach as kids vs Now...' and 'Last one to the water is a rotten egg!', five boys sprinting across white sand in bright patterned trunks, with no price, no offer and no product callout. The homepage hero is the adult half of that same joke: four men on a boat in the same loud patterned swim, under 'BIG LAKE ENERGY' with one button, 'SHOP NEW SWIM'. Product, audience and comic register all carry across. Because the ad made no conversion ask, a homepage that leads with swim is the honest place for it to land rather than a dodge.

The read

Reported as allocating roughly 10 to 20% of budget to non-conversion brand campaigns. The interesting part is structural rather than creative: most DTC brands claim to value brand and then fund it out of whatever performance leaves behind, which means never.

Why it works

  • Ring-fencing is what makes it real. Brand budget that competes with performance budget inside the same dashboard always loses.
  • Freed from a conversion goal, the creative can be funnier. The constraint that flattens brand work is the CTA it has to carry.
  • It feeds the performance layer. Recognition earned here lowers the cost of the conversion ads running alongside.

Objective fit

Awareness by explicit design. Measured on branded search, direct traffic and blended efficiency over time, never on last-click.

Where it breaks

Requires the discipline not to raid the allocation in a bad month, which is exactly when it gets raided.
