Born Primitive ad teardown: From sunrise runs to fireworks

An Independence Day colorway ad lands on exactly the right shoe, under a red Labor Day bar that has already cut it 25 percent.

“FROM SUNRISE RUNS TO FIREWORKS”

Handoff: Partial

The destination is the exact shoe. The page title reads WOMEN'S PURSUIT 1 AV, the colour line reads COLOR: AMERICANA, and the selected swatch matches the navy star field and red stripe midsole in the ad's lower frame. What changed in transit is the frame around it. The ad's holiday register meets a red LABOR DAY CLEARANCE SALE UP TO 70% OFF bar across the top of the page, the price reads $149.00 struck through to $111.75 with a 25% OFF flag, and EXCHANGE ONLY sits directly above the colour swatches. A limited colorway sold on occasion arrives as a marked down clearance item with returns withdrawn.

The read

A two panel static. The top frame is a woman crouched on a rock at dawn in a white crop and navy shorts, with FROM SUNRISE RUNS TO FIREWORKS set in a serif over the trail behind her and BUILT FOR ALL-DAY MOVEMENT underneath it. The bottom frame drops to ankle height on gravel and labels the shoe PURSUIT 1 AV, close enough to read the ring of stars on the heel, the star field on the quarter panel, and the red, white and navy stacked midsole. The creative sells one occasion, one colorway and one silhouette, and it carries no price, no badge and no call to action.

Why it works

  • The colorway is the argument. There is no performance claim in the frame beyond four words of subhead. The whole reason to click is a finish you cannot get later, which is why the second panel is shot tight enough to read the stars on the heel counter rather than styled at full body distance.
  • Two panels split the job. The top frame sells the occasion with a person in it, the bottom frame sells the object with nobody in it. That lets one asset carry both the identity pitch and the product detail without a carousel swipe, and it means the shoe still lands even if a viewer only sees the lower half in a feed crop.
  • The offer is invented at the door. The ad promises no discount at all, so the 25 percent markdown on arrival is a gift the creative never had to pay for. The cost is that the same bar tells a buyer the whole store is up to 70 percent off, which reframes a limited edition as leftover stock.

Objective fit

It fits a purchase objective. One product, one colorway, a legible silhouette and a named model number are what a product page needs to be recognised on arrival, and the page opens on the same shoe in the same colour with the size grid already visible.

Where it breaks

The clearance chrome is doing quiet damage. A sitewide 70 percent off bar sitting above a limited edition tells a first time visitor that waiting is rewarded, and EXCHANGE ONLY under the price introduces a returns objection the ad never raised and the page never answers.
