Dollar Shave Club ad teardown: 250 Years. No BS
Uses AI-generated imagery that looks obviously AI-generated, and makes that the joke rather than hiding it.
“250 Years. No BS.”

Page teardown
All 28 captured Dollar Shave Club crops started Aug 11-18 2026 and are a distinct, later campaign (intro-pricing subscription bundles, women's lineup launch, USB-C grooming tools, college/game-day razors). None carry the '250 Years. No BS.' hook, reference AI-generated imagery, or show the deliberately-artificial visual style the entry describes. The entry's observed date (May 2026) predates this capture set entirely, matching the brief's expectation that this ad had already rotated out by the time of capture.
The read
Digiday reported roughly 90% of the work produced in-house with an explicit rule about where AI is used and where humans are. The creative does not attempt photorealism. The visible artificiality is the gag, which converts the medium's biggest liability into the ad's premise.
Why it works
- Owning the tell removes the tell. Audiences increasingly spot AI creative and discount it. Announcing it first denies that reaction its power.
- Consistent with an established irreverent voice. The brand had permission for this. Most do not.
- The disclosure posture is the durable asset. A stated rule about AI use ages better than any individual execution.
Objective fit
Awareness. Judge on branded search and share rate. This does not close anyone.

Where it breaks
Practitioners are near-unanimous that end-to-end AI pipelines produce volume rather than quality. This works because it is a deliberate creative choice inside a human-run process, not because AI made it cheap.
