Shopify reported Q3 2026 revenue of $3.742 billion on November 3, 2026, up 32% from $2.844 billion. GMV grew 29% to $119.1 billion, gross profit 28% to $1.781 billion, and free cash flow reached $816 million, a 22% margin. Revenue landed inside its low-thirties guide, after three quarters above it.
- Q4 2026 guide: revenue growth in the low thirties, gross profit in the high twenties, and a free cash flow margin consistent with Q4 2025's 19%.
- GMV growth of 29% was the slowest of the last five quarters, while merchant solutions revenue grew 35%. Shopify earned more on each dollar of GMV.
- MRR grew 19% to $230 million, the same rate as Q2. The four-quarter climb in plan fees paused.
- Operating income rose 66% to $568 million as operating expenses came in at 32% of revenue, below the 33% to 34% guide.

What did Shopify report for Q3 2026?
Shopify reported Q3 2026 revenue of $3.742 billion before the market opened on November 3, 2026, up 32% from $2.844 billion a year earlier and 32% in constant currency. GMV was $119.1 billion, up 29%. Gross profit grew 28% to $1.781 billion and free cash flow was $816 million, a 22% margin, per the press release.
| Line | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 | Growth | Q3 guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
GMV | 119,145 | 92,013 | 29% | Not guided |
Revenue | 3,742 | 2,844 | 32% | Low thirties % |
Subscription solutions | 836 | 699 | 20% | Not guided |
Merchant solutions | 2,906 | 2,145 | 35% | Not guided |
MRR | 230 | 193 | 19% | Not guided |
Gross profit | 1,781 | 1,391 | 28% | Mid-to-high twenties % |
Operating expenses, % of revenue | 32% | 37% | 33% to 34% | |
Operating income | 568 | 343 | 66% | Not guided |
Free cash flow | 816 | 507 | 61% | Not guided |
Free cash flow margin | 22% | 18% | High teens to low twenties |
Every guided line landed inside or better than its range. Revenue growth sat in the low thirties. Gross profit growth of 28% was at the top of mid-to-high twenties. Operating expenses came in at 32.4% of revenue against a 33% to 34% guide, and stock-based compensation was $140 million against $150 million guided. The free cash flow margin of 22% sat at the top of its range.
Revenue matched what the Street expected almost to the dollar. GMV came in just under analysts' estimates. In each of the three quarters before, revenue growth cleared the top of Shopify's own range; in Q3 it landed inside it.
Revenue grew faster than GMV
GMV growth slowed to 29%, or 30% in constant currency, the slowest of the five quarters from Q3 2025. Merchant solutions revenue grew 35% over the same stretch. Shopify's merchant solutions revenue came to 2.44% of GMV, up from 2.33% a year ago. Payments are the biggest part of that line, so more of each order is running through Shopify's rails and fees. The release doesn't give payments penetration; that number comes on the call.
Margins went up below the gross line
Operating income grew 66% to $568 million, and operating margin rose to 15.2% from 12.1%. Research and development grew 33%, while sales and marketing grew 14% and G&A 13%. Transaction and loan losses fell to $120 million from $148 million, even though Shopify bought or originated $1.70 billion of loans and merchant cash advances in the quarter, up from $996 million.
Gross margin went the other way: 47.6%, down from 48.9%. Subscription gross margin fell to 79.1% from 81.7%, as subscription cost of revenue grew 37% against 20% revenue growth. Merchant solutions gross margin held near 38.5%. The release doesn't say what drove the subscription cost; it goes on the list for the call.
The free cash flow footnote
Since April 2026, Shopify reports merchant cash advance flows in investing activities instead of operating. For Q3 the release puts the effect at a $30 million net cash use moved into investing. Put back into operating cash flow, that's about $786 million of free cash flow, or 21% of revenue. So about a point of the 22% comes from the reclassification. I walked through that change in my Q2 2026 earnings read. Shopify also bought back $562 million of stock in Q3.
How does Q3 2026 compare with Shopify's last four quarters?
From Q3 2025 to Q3 2026, Shopify grew GMV between 29% and 35% every quarter and revenue between 31% and 34%, per its own press releases. Q3 2026 sits at the low end on both. Free cash flow margin ran 15% to 22%, and Q3 was the high. Two lines moved more than the headline did: subscriptions and gross profit.
| Metric | Q3 2025 | Q4 2025 | Q1 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2026 |

Gross profit growth | 24% | 25% | 32% | 31% | 28% |

Plan fees held, but stopped speeding up
MRR growth went from 10% in Q3 2025 to 19.5% in Q2 2026, four straight quarters up. In Q3 it was 19.2%. Subscription revenue grew 20%, down from 22%. A 20% rate would have said plan pricing was doing real work. It came in just under that, and the line still grows almost twice as fast as it did a year ago.
Shopify no longer publishes a merchant count, so you can't split that growth between new merchants and merchants moving up to plans like Plus. The acceleration that ran through the first half paused in Q3, and the subscription line is still the slow part of the business.
Where the growth came from
The release doesn't break out international, offline or B2B GMV; the call did. International GMV grew 32%, offline 30% and B2B 74%, against 37%, 32% and 76% on the Q2 2026 call and 41%, 31% and 98% a year ago. By region, North America grew 28% in constant currency for a third straight quarter and Europe 33%. Offline is the one I watch. Point of sale is a slower sale than an online store, and it held at 30%, so Shopify is winning retail as well as online. Lifetime offline GMV passed $200 billion, and 55% of merchants who added Shopify's point of sale in Q3 were new to Shopify.
Gross profit still trails revenue
Gross profit grew slower than revenue for the fifth quarter running. The gap was 3.6 points in Q3, wider than Q2's 2.5 points and much narrower than the 7.1 points of Q3 2025. Shopify guided for a gap, so the thing to check was whether it widened. It widened a little, and the subscription cost line accounts for much of it: merchant solutions gross margin held steady while subscription gross margin fell.
Did Shopify beat its Q3 2026 guidance?
Shopify met its Q3 2026 guidance instead of beating it. Revenue grew 32% against a low-thirties guide, and gross profit grew 28% against mid-to-high twenties. In the three quarters before, revenue growth landed above the guided range every time, per Shopify's press releases.
| Quarter | Revenue guide | Revenue actual | Gross profit guide | Gross profit actual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Q4 2025 | Mid-to-high 20s | 31% | Low-to-mid 20s | 25% |
Q1 2026 | Low 30s | 34% | High 20s | 32% |
Q2 2026 | High 20s | 34% | Mid 20s | 31% |
Q3 2026 | Low 30s | 32% | Mid-to-high 20s | 28% |
Gross profit is the better read of the two. Shopify has now landed at or above its gross profit guide four quarters running, and 28% is at the top of the range. Revenue is where the gap closed: 32% sits inside "low thirties", where Q2's 34% cleared "high twenties" by several points.
After three quarters of beats, a quarter on the guide makes the Q4 outlook worth more than the Q3 print.
Q3 met the guide; Q4 is Shopify's first official word on Black Friday.
What did Shopify guide for Q4 2026?
For Q4 2026, Shopify expects revenue to grow at a low-thirties percentage rate and gross profit dollars at a high-twenties rate. It guides operating expenses at 29% to 30% of revenue, $155 million of stock-based compensation, and a free cash flow margin consistent with Q4 2025. As always, Shopify guides growth rates, not dollar figures.
| Line | Q4 2026 guide | Q4 2025 guide | Q4 2025 actual |
|---|---|---|---|
Revenue growth | Low thirties % | Mid-to-high twenties % | 31% |
Gross profit growth | High twenties % | Low-to-mid twenties % | 25% |
Operating expenses | 29% to 30% of revenue | ||
Stock-based compensation | $155M | ||
Free cash flow margin | Consistent with Q4 2025 | 19% |
The comparison that matters is the starting point. In November 2025 Shopify guided Q4 2025 revenue growth to the mid-to-high twenties and delivered 31%. For Q4 2026 it starts at the low thirties, against a Q4 2025 base of $3.67 billion of revenue and $123.8 billion of GMV. The gross profit guide moved up too, to high twenties from low-to-mid twenties.
The free cash flow guide steps down from Q3: "consistent with Q4 2025" means about 19%, against Q3's 22%. The merchant cash advance reclassification also keeps moving cash between lines, so compare like with like. If you see a dollar figure quoted as Shopify's Q4 guide, it's someone else's arithmetic.
What did Shopify say about Shop and Shop Pay in Q3?
The Q3 2026 press release gives no Shop Pay, Shop or AI-commerce figures. The most recent hard number is from Shopify's Fall '26 Edition on October 28: more than 400 million Shop Pay accounts as of September 30, 2026, the last day of Q3. Shop Pay GMV grew 67% in Q3 2025 and 53% in Q2 2026, per those quarters' calls.
The release does put agents in its first line. Harley Finkelstein said Shopify is building commerce into "every surface, every agent, and increasingly, everywhere." The Fall '26 Edition, six days before the print, showed what that means. Shop Pay checkout runs inside AI agents like Muse, Claude Duet and Instinct, and Shop Pay now works for some brands that aren't on Shopify. The Shop app added one cart across brands, and Shop Campaigns reached 35 more markets. I covered the brand side in my Fall '26 Edition review, and what agents mean for a store in agentic commerce for Shopify brands.
I helped build and scale the Shopify Partner Program, and I've seen Shopify announce a direction before it reports on it. The Edition made the announcement and the release stayed quiet. These five are what the call has to answer.
- Shop Pay GMV and its growth rate. 53% in Q2. On the call, Shopify put Q3 at over 50%. That's near 50% on a larger base, so Shop Pay is still gaining share inside Shopify's GMV.
- Off-Shopify Shop Pay. A Shop Pay order from a brand that isn't on Shopify isn't Shopify GMV. If it shows up anywhere, it's in payments revenue. The call didn't size it. Harley Finkelstein said shoppers using Claude Duet, Instinct and Grok Bot can now pay with Shop Pay at any merchant.
- A share for AI orders. The Q1 call gave AI traffic up 8x and orders up 13x; by Q2 both were about 3x. In Q3, traffic was up 2.6x and orders 3.3x. Still no share of sessions or GMV; Finkelstein said the volume "is still small." AI channels also send shoppers to product pages at three times the rate of organic search, and those shoppers convert 64% more often.
- Payments penetration. 65% of GMV in Q3 2025 and 68% in Q2 2026. On the call, Q3 came in above 68%, up 3 points from a year ago and about level with Q2.
- The Capital book. 30-to-179-day delinquency rose to 3.0% at June 30 from 2.3% at year end. In Q3, originations rose 71% while transaction and loan losses fell. The call gave no delinquency figure, so the Q3 10-Q table is the number to check when it's filed.
What do Shopify's Q3 results mean for merchants?
For merchants, the number to take from Shopify's Q3 report is the Q4 guide: revenue growth in the low thirties, a stronger starting point than the mid-to-high twenties Shopify guided for Q4 2025. Black Friday is November 27, 2026, three and a half weeks after the call.
Treat that guide as a platform average. Q3 GMV grew 29%, and that's an average across millions of stores with very different years. Set the Q4 guide next to your own November plan, and next to your own Q3, before you read anything into it. If your Q3 grew well below 29%, the platform's season tells you little about yours.
Then there's the take rate. Merchant solutions revenue grew 35% while GMV grew 29%, so Shopify earned more on each dollar sold through it. Most of that is payments. More of your checkout runs on Shopify's rails and rules every quarter, which is mostly good for conversion. It also makes Shopify Protect settings, payout timing and chargeback handling part of your margin, and worth reading before the peak, not after it. My peak-season operating playbook has the checklist.
Shop is the other thing to watch, even though the release said nothing about it. A cheaper first order through Shop Campaigns is a good deal. A customer who comes back through Shop's search instead of your store is one you rented. Your second-order data will show you which one you got. If you borrow from Shopify Capital for the season, originations grew 71% in Q3, so you won't be the only one; my Shopify Capital guide compares it with the alternatives.
What do Shopify's Q3 results mean for app developers?
For app developers, the subscription line is still the one to read. Shopify's MRR grew 19% to $230 million in Q3 2026 and subscription revenue grew 20%, both about twice the rate of a year earlier. Plan fees are growing fast while Shopify ships native features every Edition, so more of a merchant's software budget goes to Shopify.
Fall '26 moved fraud rules, chargeback responses and checkout fields into the core, and the App Store passed 29,000 apps while it happened. Rising Shopify software revenue, a growing native feature list and a crowded store all squeeze apps that sell a single feature. If your app sells something Shopify now gives away, this is a fair moment to look at your roadmap.
Two numbers in the release point the other way. R&D grew 33% to $497 million, the fastest-growing expense line, and Finkelstein's "every agent" line says where Shopify wants commerce to show up next. Each new surface needs apps for catalog data, policy text and post-purchase. And GMV is still growing near 30%. The partner earning model changed in August: referral partners now earn 0.1% of merchant GMV on top of 20% of subscription, so a $119 billion quarter reaches partners more directly than it used to.
Shopify's developer account posted where installs grew from Q2 to Q3, by App Store tag and leaving out reinstalls. Product content apps led at 47%, then other payments apps at 32%, product feeds and other operations apps at 28% each, and other advertising apps at 27%. Those two are the catalog data agents read, so the fastest install growth sits where Shopify says commerce is heading. On the call, Finkelstein named the tools for it: WebMCP, which lets any agent complete a checkout at any store, and Shop.dev and Shop.md for developers who want commerce inside their own app.
The pause in MRR acceleration is worth a look too. If plan-fee growth has levelled off near 19%, the merchant count and the Plus mix are growing at a steady clip, not a rising one. For an app priced per store, that's the growth rate of your addressable market.
What will investors take from Shopify's Q3 2026 report?
Investors got a quarter that met the guide on revenue, beat it on operating expenses, and printed the highest free cash flow margin of the last five quarters. The questions now are the Q4 outlook, the subscription gross margin, and how much of the free cash flow margin comes from the April 2026 accounting change. This is my read as an operator, not investment advice.
Cost control was the clearest positive. Operating expenses fell to 32.4% of revenue from 37%, and operating income grew 66%. The buyback continued: $562 million in Q3, after $491 million in Q1 and $1.42 billion in Q2, against a $5 billion authorization. And the credit line read better than Q2, with transaction and loan losses down 19% while loans and merchant cash advances on the balance sheet grew to $2.35 billion from $1.78 billion at year end.
The less flattering lines are GMV growth at a five-quarter low and a gross margin of 47.6%, down from 48.9%. Neither changes the growth story, and both tend to get left out when a quarter is shared as a screenshot. On the call, CFO Jeff Hoffmeister called growth broad-based across merchant sizes and regions, split evenly between new and existing stores. He put the subscription margin drop down to Sidekick's AI costs and to hosting capacity added before Black Friday. Only about 1.5 points of the free cash flow margin gain is structural, by his account.
What does Shopify's Q3 growth mean for shoppers?
For shoppers, Shopify's growth shows up as Shop Pay in more places. With more than 400 million accounts as of September 30, 2026, a shopper's saved details now travel into AI agents, a multi-brand cart on Shop and checkouts for brands that aren't on Shopify, which means fewer forms and a faster checkout.
One wallet across agents and stores is convenient, and it gives Shopify a view of buying behaviour that no single brand has. Shoppers also get stronger fraud and dispute tooling, plus HSA and FSA spending in Shop Pay, coming in the US. The call gave no usage numbers for these, but Shop's own GMV more than doubled in Q3, and Shop Pay Installments reached Australia.
What did Shopify say on the Q3 2026 call?
On the November 3 call, President Harley Finkelstein argued that more places to sell means more complexity, and that complexity is where Shopify earns its fees: "the more complexity there is, the more our value goes up." AI traffic to Shopify stores grew 2.6x and orders 3.3x, Shop Pay GMV grew over 50%, payments penetration passed 68%, and B2B GMV grew 74%. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister guided Q4 revenue growth to the low thirties, with less than a point of currency headwind. Analysts pushed on four things: how Shopify gets paid when an agent does the buying, the subscription gross margin, why Q4 free cash flow won't rise from Q3, and the price of shop.com.
- Shop as a channel. Shop's own GMV more than doubled year over year. Shopify is moving Shop from shop.app to shop.com; an analyst put the domain at about $100 million, a figure management didn't address. Finkelstein said shopper traffic to Shop is growing faster on the web than in the app.
- Agents and the take rate. Hoffmeister said a shopper who starts in an agent and lands on a Shopify store earns Shopify the same economics as any other discovery source. On Shop Pay as the default wallet inside agents, Finkelstein's answer was that it will win on merit. He called the agent "just this new front door" and Shopify everything behind it.
- Q4 and Black Friday. No November or Black Friday numbers. Operating expenses are guided at 29% to 30% of revenue, with more marketing before BFCM, part of it spend moved from a Q3 marketing test, plus infrastructure for storefront resiliency. Together with tax timing, Hoffmeister said that's why the Q4 free cash flow margin won't step up from Q3 the way it usually does.
- Q3 free cash flow. Of the four-point margin gain, Hoffmeister called about 1.5 points structural. The rest came from the paused marketing test, tax receivable timing and the cash advance accounting change, in roughly equal parts.
- Subscriptions. Subscription revenue grew 20%, led by Standard plans, with Plus and variable platform fees adding similar amounts. Plus was 34% of MRR and grew 18%. Sidekick drove the year-over-year cost rise, but from Q2 to Q3 Sidekick conversations rose 14% while total Sidekick cost fell 18%, through model selection, distillation and caching.
- The AI channel. Shopify still gives no share of orders. About three quarters of AI-referred sales came from outside Shopify's top 100 product categories, and searches that run on Shopify Catalog convert at twice the rate of general AI search. That favours the long tail, which is most of Shopify's merchants.
If you sell through Shop Pay, the Q4 guide is worth reading next to your own BFCM plan. I've argued that a deep discount at peak ad prices is a losing trade for a lot of brands, and Shopify's low-thirties season outlook is the backdrop for that call.
