Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition on October 28, 2026, and built it around Shopify's network. Shop Pay's 400 million-plus accounts and a catalog of over a billion products now reach shoppers inside AI agents and on Shop, and POS recognizes more of those shoppers in store. For brands, the job is making the store readable to agents. For app founders, it's another round of native features.
- Shop Pay checkout now runs inside Muse, Claude Duet and Instinct. Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also take Shop Pay for brands that aren't on Shopify.
- A new knowledge base under Sales channels > Agentic sets the facts agents receive about your store. Agents only get what you publish.
- Shopify Protect adds fraud rules you can backtest and AI-written chargeback responses. Shopify says it wins 60% more “product not received” disputes.
- Rollouts bundle theme, checkout, catalog and discount changes into one scheduled launch or A/B test. That's how I'd test a Black Friday offer.

What's in Shopify's Fall '26 Edition?
On October 28, 2026, Shopify released its Fall '26 Edition and called it Exponential. Shopify lists more than 150 updates across 11 areas, from agents and Sidekick to payments, POS and the developer platform. Shopify frames it as a network effect: every merchant gains from every buyer who has ever checked out with Shop Pay.
I read these drops from a few seats. I helped build and scale the Shopify Partner Program, I've run brands on the platform, and I've sold software into it. Most of this Edition is housekeeping: folders for files, bulk staff uploads by CSV, 13 more admin languages. The moves below are the ones that change how you sell or what you build. If you want the last drop for comparison, my Spring '26 Editions read covers it.
| Feature | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
Shop Pay in AI agents | Checkout inside Muse, Claude Duet and Instinct, plus Shop Pay for brands off Shopify in Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct | Live, Amex coming |
Shop.md skill | Lets any agent search over a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders | Live |
Shopify connectors | Run products, orders and inventory from nine AI agents, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot | Live |
Agent knowledge base | You review and publish the store facts agents receive | Live |
Catalog eligibility view | Shows whether you qualify for Shopify Catalog and what's blocking you | Live |
Shopify Protect | Custom fraud rules with backtesting and AI chargeback responses | Rolling out soon |
Rollouts | One scheduled launch or A/B test across theme, checkout, catalogs and discounts | Live |
Universal checkout on Shop | One cart and one checkout across brands in the Shop app | Live |
Canvas | Edit the whole store on one surface with Sidekick | Early access |
Script tags | Apps can no longer create or update them | In effect |
What does the Edition change for selling through AI agents?
As of September 30, 2026, Shop Pay had more than 400 million accounts, and this Edition puts that checkout inside personal AI agents: Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Payments run on Mastercard, Visa and Discover tokens, with Amex coming. It's the biggest move in the drop, because buyers bring their identity and payment details with them.
Buying inside a chat has been tried before. ChatGPT Instant Checkout launched, reached about a dozen Shopify merchants and was gone within six months, which I covered in what happened to Instant Checkout. What's different now is who brings what. Shopify brings 400 million signed-in buyers and the payment rail, and the agent brings the conversation. Instant Checkout started with a new protocol and a short merchant list, which is a much weaker position. Amazon has gone the other way and kept agents like Meta's Muse out of its store, while Shopify builds a connector for each new one.
Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands that aren't on Shopify, so Shopify now sells its checkout and its buyers to brands that don't use its platform at all. Add the Catalog API searching products off Shopify (in beta) and universal checkout on Shop, and Shopify is building the default buying layer for agents. That's a moat for Shopify. For a Shopify brand it's thinner, because a competitor that never moved to Shopify gets the same 400 million-account wallet in the same chat. The Edition also lets anyone describe a product idea in ChatGPT or Claude and import other sellers' goods through Shopify Collective, or design a print-on-demand product with Sidekick. Expect more sellers next to you in agent results. In those results a buyer compares your product data and delivery promise against everyone else's, and the checkout is the same Shop Pay for all of you.
Google is in this too. You can sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app with checkout powered by Shopify, and Shopify's help docs list no channel fee. It's for stores selling to customers in the US, Canada or Australia, it's rolling out store by store, and it needs your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy filled in. ChatGPT works differently: it finds the product, then sends the shopper to your own checkout. So nine agents with connectors doesn't mean nine places to check out. Connectors let you run the store from a chat. In-chat checkout lives in Gemini, Copilot in the US, Muse and the personal agents that take Shop Pay.
Shopify's pitch is that merchants shouldn't have to think about any of this. Catalog sends your product data to each new agent the day it launches, and nobody asks which chats you want to be in. That's convenient, and it also means your product data and policy text are already being read in places you didn't pick. The admin's new Agentic section shows which AI channels you're live on, what buyers search for and where those orders come from. Check it before you change anything.
What brands should do this quarter
- Check Catalog eligibility. The admin now shows whether your store qualifies for Shopify Catalog and links to the fix for anything blocking it. If you're not in the Catalog, agents can't find you.
- Publish your knowledge base. Under Sales channels > Agentic, Shopify drafts facts about your store, like return windows, shipping destinations and gift services, and you approve them. Agents only receive what you publish, so an empty page means a blank answer.
- Fill in all three policies. Checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini needs terms of service, a privacy policy and a return and refund policy under Settings > Policies. A store missing one doesn't get the in-chat checkout.
- Get the Shop Promise badge if you sell in the US. Badged products can rank higher in Shop search and in the Catalog data agents use. Shopify says eligibility grew 20x, and the program is free.
- Keep compare-at prices honest. Agents now read them from the Catalog to show markdowns. An inflated compare-at price used to fool one shopper. Now it feeds a machine that compares stores side by side.
It's unglamorous work on product data, policy text and delivery promises, and agents choose what to show from that data. The setup side is in agentic storefronts, explained, and the protocol layer underneath is in UCP vs ACP.
Is Shop turning into a marketplace?
In practice, yes. As of October 2026, Shop has universal checkout for carts holding products from several brands, a rebuilt shop.com with curated content and order tracking, and Shop Campaigns in more than 35 new markets, where you only pay when an ad drives a sale. Shopify says Shop Campaigns has driven over 18 million sales.
Shopify will keep calling Shop a shopping app, and the order still shows up in your admin. But a multi-brand cart, editorial curation, ranked search and a paid placement program add up to a marketplace by any operator's definition. Treat it like one. It has its own economics: a cheaper first order through Shop Campaigns, a buyer who may remember Shop better than your brand, and rules Shopify sets.
I'd use it while it's cheap. Pay-per-sale acquisition is one of the better deals in paid media right now, and a new channel is cheapest before everyone shows up. Shopify's Shop team says there are no extra marketplace fees and you still own the customer relationship. The order and the customer record do land in your admin. Whether you own the relationship shows up in the second order, so measure that. If repeat purchases keep running through Shop's search and Shop's cart, you rented that customer.
Which payments changes put money back in your pocket?
Shopify Protect is the most practical update in the Edition. Shopify says Shopify Payments already blocks more than 12,000 high-risk payments a minute. Protect adds fraud rules you write and backtest, AI-written chargeback responses tuned to each bank and reason code, and carrier proof of delivery attached to disputes automatically.
Chargebacks are a margin leak most brands write off as a cost of doing business. Shopify says Protect wins 60% more “product not received” disputes, and chargeback protection now extends to orders not paid with Shop Pay. The features are rolling out, so check what's live in your admin. If you're on Shopify Payments, read the Protect settings before Black Friday, not after. If you write your own rules, backtest each one against last November's orders before you switch it on. Shopify's launch demo uses a rule that blocks checkout over $250 when the order includes a gift card, and in late November that describes a lot of real gift buyers.
The rest of payments is regional and worth a quick scan. There are seven new local methods, including Alipay, WeChat Pay, OXXO and MB WAY. HSA and FSA funds in Shop Pay are coming to the US, Shop Pay Installments is in early access in Australia, and multi-currency payouts reach Advanced and Plus plans in four countries. Managed Markets, which Shopify credits with 50% higher international conversion, now offers all-in prices with flat-rate shipping.
What should you change before Black Friday?
Very little. Black Friday is November 27, 2026, about a month out, and the restyled admin and Canvas are still rolling out or in early access. Don't redesign a theme in November. The one Fall '26 feature I'd use now is rollouts, which schedule and A/B test theme, checkout, catalog and discount changes as a single launch.
Shopify will also change things on its own schedule. Operators on X spotted checkout changes this week, including on stores that aren't on Plus. Take a baseline now: checkout conversion, payment-method mix and average order value by day for the last four weeks. If a number moves in November, you'll want to know whether it was your offer or Shopify's release.
I've argued that peak-season CAC plus your deepest discount is a losing game for a lot of brands, and the full case is in BFCM without discounts. Rollouts let you test that instead of arguing about it. Run your offer against a share of traffic, hold the rest on a smaller incentive or a non-price offer, and compare contribution margin per visitor, not conversion rate.
Catalogs help with the cleanup too. You can schedule promotional prices across markets and have them roll back automatically when the sale ends, which saves the January morning spent un-discounting products by hand.
Which app categories did Shopify absorb this time?
Every Edition moves a few app categories into the core, and Fall '26 reaches fraud rules, chargeback tools, checkout fields, stock counts, POS staff tracking and store policies. The Protect rule builder backtests fraud rules against past orders, and Shopify Messaging now sends automated WhatsApp abandonment messages. Shopify's pitch for Protect is that it sees the whole sale across millions of stores, from the checkout attempt to the finished order, while a gateway's fraud tool sees only the payment step in between. That wider view is why I rate the fraud and chargeback apps high. The pressure ratings in Fig. 02 are my read, not Shopify's.
| App category | What's native now | Pressure |
|---|---|---|
Basic fraud rules | Protect rule builder with backtesting and drift alerts | High |
Chargeback responses | AI responses per bank and reason code, delivery proof attached | High |
Checkout field apps | Text inputs, date pickers, checkboxes and choice lists (rolling out) | High |
Policy generators | Store policies generated automatically and kept in sync | High |
Stock count apps | Scheduled counts by item and location, in admin and POS | Medium |
POS staff tools | Sales tracked to each associate, activity log by staff name | Medium |
WhatsApp recovery | Browse, cart and checkout recovery in Shopify Messaging | Medium |
Translation sync | Store edits stay current across translations | Medium |
The pattern hasn't changed since I was inside the building. Shopify watches what nearly every merchant installs, ships a good-enough native version and gives it to every store. If your app sells the baseline, you're now competing with free. If it sells depth, like better models, more data or a workflow Shopify won't build, the native version raises the floor and you sell above it. I wrote the longer version for the Winter '26 Edition, and it still holds.
Deadlines and money worth noting
- Apps can no longer create or update script tags and have to move to theme app extensions or web pixels. The dates are on the platform deadlines tracker.
- Migrate to expiring tokens before January 2027 to keep the app listed on the App Store.
- App Store reviews are now checked against shop trust, identity and app activity, and app names have to be unique. Apps with real reviews come out ahead.
- Partners now earn from subscription revenue and online GMV for every business they bring to Shopify, on all plans, for four years. Having helped build the Partner Program, I think this is the most underrated line in the Edition. A GMV share keeps paying an agency as its merchants grow, which rewards growing stores over signing them up. The rest of this year's partner terms are in the 2026 Partner Program Agreement.
- Developers building on the Catalog API can earn the commission a business sets in Shop Campaigns, plus 0.3% from Shopify, on each sale they drive (early access). That's an affiliate model for agent builders, and it's how Shopify will recruit them.
What can you safely ignore?
Most of the cosmetic work. The restyled admin, the thank-you page animation and the tiled payment layout arrive on Shopify's schedule, and there's nothing to do. Canvas is in early access, and Shopify says it gets a store from no theme to launch 20% faster. That matters for new stores far more than for a brand with a theme that already works.
Shopify Messaging also ships a pre-built Black Friday email campaign. It's fine for a store with no email program. If you already run a proper email platform, skip it.
Sidekick is the one I wouldn't ignore, even though it isn't urgent. Shopify says daily sessions are up 4.2x year over year, and Sidekick can now stage several changes at once, write code and remember what you teach it. You still approve every change. Hand it the bulk edits you'd give an assistant, like rewriting descriptions across a collection or building draft orders, and keep the judgment calls for yourself. More on that in Sidekick and agentic commerce.
Shopify's bet this Edition is its buyer network. Make your store readable to it, then get back to Black Friday.
Questions about
the Fall '26
Edition.
When was the Shopify Fall '26 Edition released?
Shopify released the Fall '26 Edition, titled Exponential, on October 28, 2026. It covers more than 150 updates across agents, Sidekick, the online store, merchandising, retail, payments, operations, Shop, marketing, fulfillment and the developer platform. Some features are live now, while others are rolling out soon or in early access.
Can customers check out with Shop Pay inside AI agents?
Yes. As of October 2026, Shop Pay checkout works inside Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands that aren't on Shopify. Purchases use Mastercard, Visa and Discover tokens, and Shopify lists American Express as coming soon.
How do I control what AI agents say about my store?
Use the new knowledge base under Sales channels > Agentic in the Shopify admin. Shopify drafts facts from your storefront, such as return windows, shipping destinations and gift services, and suggests updates over time. You review and publish them, and agents only receive the facts you publish.
Should I turn on Fall '26 features before Black Friday?
Be selective. Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026, so skip theme redesigns and big workflow changes in November. Do the low-risk work instead: Catalog eligibility, your agent knowledge base, Shop Promise if you're eligible in the US, and Shopify Protect settings. Use rollouts to test your offer on a share of traffic.
